Enter the rooms you are packing and roughly how much you own. The calculator uses per-room planning figures, which you can change, to estimate how many boxes of each size you need and how much tape.

How this was calculated
  1. Bedrooms: 2 × 12 boxes = 24
  2. Bathrooms: 1 × 4 boxes = 4
  3. Kitchens: 1 × 19 boxes = 19
  4. Living or family rooms: 1 × 10 boxes = 10
  5. Dining rooms: 1 × 6 boxes = 6
  6. Total before extra = 63 boxes
  7. Each size with 10% extra (× 1.1), rounded up: small 23.1 → 24, medium 29.7 → 30, large 14.3 → 15, wardrobe 2.2 → 3
  8. Tape = 72 boxes ÷ about 15 boxes per roll, rounded up = 5 rolls
  • Box counts for a move are rules of thumb, not measurements. Walk through your cupboards and adjust the per-room figures if a room is unusually full or empty.

How the moving box calculation works

  1. For each type of room, boxes = number of rooms × boxes per room.
  2. That is multiplied by how much you own: 0.75 for less than most, 1 for average, 1.35 for more than most.
  3. Each room's boxes are split between sizes in the proportions below, the sizes are added up across rooms, the extra is added, and each size is rounded up.
  4. Tape: about one roll per 15 boxes, rounded up.

The starting assumptions

There is no formula for how much people own, so the calculator starts from planning figures for an averagely furnished home. Change any "boxes per room" figure to match yours.

Choosing box sizes

  • Small boxes are for heavy things: books, tins, tools and records. A large box of books is too heavy to lift safely.
  • Medium boxes are the workhorse for kitchenware, toys, small appliances and most household items.
  • Large boxes are for light, bulky things like bedding, towels, cushions and lampshades.
  • Wardrobe boxes let clothes travel on their hangers.

Rounding rules

  • Each box size is rounded up separately after the extra is added, so the total can be a few boxes more than the unrounded figure.
  • Tape is rounded up to whole rolls.
